Adelaide Oval stands, sections and gates
This layout applies to every event at Adelaide Oval (AFL, cricket, concerts and rugby), not just Rugby World Cup 2027. The first digit of a section number is its level: 1xx is Level 1, 2xx Level 2, 3xx Level 3 and 5xx Level 5. The rest of the number runs around the ground stand by stand. Your ticket shows your entry gate, stand level, aisle and seat. For rugby the pitch runs north–south, so the Western and Eastern stands are the sidelines and the Riverbank Stand and Northern Mound are the ends.
| Stand | Where | Sections by level | Roof cover (official guide) |

| Northern Mound and The Hill | Northern end, by the heritage scoreboard | L1 142–149, plus The Hill (general admission standing) | No cover. |
- Gates: the South Gate is on the Southern Plaza, the way in from the Riverbank footbridge and Adelaide Railway Station. The East Gate is on King William Road, where Footy Express buses stop. Best seats for rugby at Adelaide Oval
Short answer: Adelaide Oval is an oval-shaped cricket and AFL ground, so the rugby pitch runs north–south through the middle of a much larger arena and the ends are a long way from the try lines. That makes sideline seats worth more here than at a rectangular stadium. The best seats for rugby are the lower-tier sideline sections in the Western and Eastern stands between the 22s, as close to halfway as you can get — Category 1 on the map. Category 2 sideline seats a few sections further out are the best value in the ground.
| Category | Where it is | Why choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Category 1 | Lower tier (Level 1) of the Western and Eastern stands, the central blocks either side of halfway | Closest seats to the pitch with a level, full-width view. The seat to buy for South Africa v Italy and Argentina v Fiji. |
| Category 2 | Sideline blocks toward the 22s, plus the central rows of the middle sideline tier | Same sideline angle, slightly further from halfway or one tier up. Best price-to-view ratio at Adelaide Oval. |
| Category 3 | The corners and the upper sideline tiers of the Western and Eastern stands | Elevated, tactical view of both backlines; corner seats are close to one try line and still under the roof. |
| Category 4 | Behind the posts in the Riverbank Stand (southern end) and at the northern end near the heritage scoreboard | Straight behind the goal kicks and close to tries at your end. On an oval the far end is distant, so use the big screens. |
| Category 5–6 | The highest rows of the Riverbank Stand and the outer upper corners | The cheapest way into a Rugby World Cup match in Adelaide, with a panoramic view of the whole arena and the city skyline. |
Sideline or behind the posts?
At an oval ground, go sideline (Categories 1–2) if you can — the extra distance behind the posts is bigger than at a rectangular stadium. Category 3 upper sideline is the best compromise between price and view. Choose Category 4 for the atmosphere in the Riverbank Stand and a lower price.
Sun, shade and rain
- Roof: Adelaide Oval does not publish a single cover figure and says it cannot guarantee full protection. Its official guide shows the upper levels are largely covered and Level 1 of the Eastern and Riverbank stands is covered only from about row R back. Level 1 of the Western Stand, the northern sections and The Hill have no cover.
- Daytime kick-offs: four of the six Rugby World Cup 2027 matches here start in daylight — Wales v Zimbabwe (Sat 2 Oct, 12:15), South Africa v Italy (Sun 3 Oct, 14:15), Fiji v Canada (Sun 10 Oct, 12:15) and Argentina v Fiji (Sat 16 Oct, 13:15). In October the Adelaide sun is high and, in the afternoon, sits in the north-west. The Eastern Stand faces the afternoon sun; the Western Stand is shaded first. For a midday kick-off any front row can be in sun, so pick mid-to-upper rows under the roof or bring a hat and sunscreen.
- Evenings: England v Zimbabwe (20:15) and Japan v USA (20:00) are night games; October evenings in Adelaide can drop into the low teens, so take a jacket for the upper tiers.

Does Adelaide Oval have a different name at Rugby World Cup 2027?
No. Unlike most tournament venues, Adelaide Oval carries no sponsor name, so World Rugby, the venue and your ticket all say Adelaide Oval. It is the historic ground on War Memorial Drive, North Adelaide, redeveloped between 2010 and 2014.
How are sections numbered at Adelaide Oval?
The first digit is the level, and the rest of the number runs around the ground by stand. In the Western Stand, Level 1 is sections 100 to 113, Level 2 is 200 to 215 (the only Level 2), Level 3 is 300 to 315 and Level 4 is 406 to 410. The Riverbank Stand at the southern end uses the 120s, 320s and 520s. The Eastern Stand uses 130 to 141, 330 to 340 and 530 to 544. The Northern Mound is 142 to 149 plus The Hill.
Which gate should I use at Adelaide Oval?
Use the entry gate recommended on your ticket. The South Gate on the Southern Plaza is the way in from the Riverbank footbridge and Adelaide Railway Station. The East Gate is on King William Road, where Footy Express buses stop. The two North gates (Bob Quinn and Clarrie Grimmett) are at the northern end. Guest Services is inside the East Gate.
Which Rugby World Cup 2027 matches are played at Adelaide Oval?
Six pool matches: Wales v Zimbabwe (Sat 2 Oct), South Africa v Italy (Sun 3 Oct), England v Zimbabwe (Fri 8 Oct), Fiji v Canada (Sun 10 Oct), Japan v USA (Fri 15 Oct) and Argentina v Fiji (Sat 16 Oct). Adelaide does not host any knockout matches.
What are the best seats at Adelaide Oval for rugby?
Category 1 — the lower-tier sideline sections in the Western and Eastern stands closest to halfway. Because the rugby pitch sits inside a much larger oval, sideline seats are noticeably closer to the action than seats behind the posts. Category 2 sideline is the best value; Category 3 upper sideline is the best compromise between price and view.
Are seats at Adelaide Oval under cover, and which side is in the sun?
Adelaide Oval does not publish a single cover figure. Its official guide shows the upper levels of the Western, Eastern and Riverbank stands are largely under cover, and Level 1 of the Eastern and Riverbank stands is covered only from about row R back. Level 1 of the Western Stand, the northern sections and The Hill have no cover. Four RWC 2027 matches here kick off in daylight. The afternoon sun is in the north-west, so the Eastern Stand faces it while the Western Stand is shaded first. For a midday start, pick mid-to-upper rows under the roof.
How do I get to Adelaide Oval and what can I bring in?
Walk from Adelaide Railway Station across the Riverbank footbridge (about 600 m), or take a tram to Festival Plaza (about 500 m). Enter via the gate recommended on your ticket (the South Gate, the East Gate or one of the two North gates). Every bag is searched and screened. Eskies of any type, cans, glass and alcohol are prohibited, and prams cannot be taken inside. Free public transport with your ticket applies to AFL games; confirmation for RWC 2027 is pending.
