Marvel Stadium = Docklands Stadium = Etihad Stadium. One venue at 740 Bourke Street, Docklands, next to Southern Cross Station. Rugby World Cup 2027 lists it under its clean name Docklands Stadium; Melburnians say Marvel, and older tickets and maps may still say Etihad or Telstra Dome.

Marvel Stadium sections, levels and gates

This layout applies to every event at Marvel Stadium (AFL, concerts, A-League, cricket and rugby), not just Rugby World Cup 2027. Marvel Stadium does not use 100/200/300 section numbers: your ticket shows a level and an aisle, then a row and seat.

Level What it is Good to know
Level 1 Lower bowl, closest to the field For rugby and soccer the Level 1 seating bays on all four sides can be moved in toward the pitch (up to 18 m on the sides and 15 m at the ends), so Level 1 is much closer to a rugby game than to an AFL game.
Level 2 Middle tier The harbour (west) side of Level 2 is the members’ Medallion Club, entered via Gates 8 and 9. Reserved Level 2 seats are on the other sides.
Level C/D Corporate and dining level Private suites between Level 2 and Level 3, not general seating.
Level 3 Upper tier The highest and cheapest seats, with a full view of the field under the roof.
  • Aisle numbers: the bowl is divided into aisles 1–48, and the same numbers repeat on every level, so Level 1 Aisle 30 sits below Level 3 Aisle 30. On the official stadium map, Aisle 1 is at Stadium Square on the Bourke Street (south) end, aisles 12–13 face Harbour Esplanade (west), 24–25 face La Trobe Street (north) and 36–37 face the Wurundjeri Way side (east). The aisle printed on your ticket is the walkway nearest your seat.
  • Gates: Gates 1–9. Bourke Street side: Gates 1, 2, 3, 4 and 9 (Gates 2 and 3 open onto Stadium Square). Harbour Esplanade: Gates 8–9. La Trobe Street: Gates 6–8. Gate 5 is on the eastern walkway. Enter through the gate printed on your ticket. There are no pass-outs. Guest Services and ticket boxes are at Gate 1 (Level 1, Aisle 3) and Gate 5.
  • Roof: the retractable roof closes in about eight minutes and covers the whole bowl when shut. World Rugby has confirmed it will stay closed for every Rugby World Cup 2027 match.
  • Accessible seating: accessible seats are spread around several tiers (on Level 3 at aisles 6, 19, 30 and 43). For most events they are booked through Ticketmaster, the stadium’s authorised agent, where Companion Card holders can add a free companion ticket. Sensory rooms are at Level 1 Aisle 3 and Level 3 Aisle 31.
  • Families: Kids Zones are at Level 1 Aisle 27 and Level 3 Aisle 30, with parent rooms at Level 1 aisles 3 and 28. Alcohol can only be consumed in designated areas. The stadium does not publish dedicated alcohol-free seating bays.

Best seats for rugby at Marvel Stadium

Short answer: Marvel Stadium is a multi-purpose venue whose lower tiers move up to 18 metres forward for rectangular sports, so for Rugby World Cup 2027 the Level 1 sideline seats sit close to the touchline. The best seats for rugby are the Level 1 sideline sections on the east and west sides between the two 22-metre lines, as near to halfway as possible — Category 1 on the map. Category 2 sideline seats a few blocks further out are the best value, and because the roof will be closed for every match, no seat here is affected by sun or rain.

Category Where it is Why choose it
Category 1 Level 1, east and west sidelines, the central blocks either side of halfway Closest, widest view of the pitch and level with the halfway line. The seat to buy for New Zealand v Hong Kong China and the Round of 16.
Category 2 Level 1 sideline blocks toward the 22s, plus the central rows of the Level 2 sideline Same sideline angle, slightly further from halfway or one level up. Best price-to-view ratio at Marvel Stadium.
Category 3 The four corners and the Level 3 (upper) sideline sections Elevated, coach's-eye view of both backlines; corner seats sit close to one try line.
Category 4 Behind the posts at the north and south ends, Levels 1 and 2 Straight behind the goal kicks and close to tries at your end; the enclosed bowl keeps the noise in.
Category 5–6 Level 3 behind the posts and the outermost upper corners The cheapest way into a Rugby World Cup match in Melbourne, with a full view of the pitch under the roof.

Sideline or behind the posts?

Sideline (Categories 1–2) if you want to read the game; behind the posts (Category 4) if you want atmosphere, close-up tries at one end and a lower price. Level 3 sideline (Category 3) is a good compromise: high enough to see the whole shape of both teams, still directly over the touchline.

Sun, shade and rain

  • Roof: Marvel Stadium has a retractable roof that closes in under 20 minutes, and World Rugby has confirmed the roof will remain closed for every Rugby World Cup 2027 match. It is the only fully enclosed venue of the tournament.
  • Daytime kick-offs: Argentina v Spain (Sun 10 Oct, 15:15), Ireland v Uruguay (Sun 17 Oct, 14:45) and Round of 16 Match 6 (Sun 24 Oct, 16:45) start in the afternoon, but with the roof shut there is no sun or glare to plan around — pick your seats on view and price alone.
  • Weather: Melbourne in October is famously changeable, which is exactly why the closed roof matters. Bring a layer for the walk from Southern Cross; inside, conditions are the same in every category.

Getting to Marvel Stadium: transport, gates and bag rules

  • Address: 740 Bourke Street, Docklands VIC 3008 — on the western edge of the Melbourne CBD.
  • Train: Southern Cross Station is next door; walk across the Bourke Street pedestrian footbridge straight to the stadium concourse. Regional V/Line trains and the airport SkyBus also terminate at Southern Cross.
  • Tram: city trams reach the venue along La Trobe Street and Harbour Esplanade; most Docklands stops are inside the free tram zone.
  • Driving: there is limited paid parking around Docklands and it fills early — public transport is the sensible option for 50,000-plus crowds.
  • Gates: the stadium recommends using the entry point and entry time printed on your ticket. Arrive early: bags and belongings can be searched and screened at the gate.
  • Bags: one small bag per person, no larger than A3 (about 30 cm × 40 cm) and it must fit under your seat. Folded-over larger bags are not accepted. Bag rules for RWC 2027 matches will be confirmed by the tournament closer to the date — check your ticket email.
  • Not allowed: alcohol, glass, cans and spray cans, musical instruments and noise makers (whistles, horns, drums), flares and fireworks, drones, and professional cameras.
  • Tickets: GoalTickets delivers mobile tickets before match day; keep your phone charged for scanning at the gate.

Marvel Stadium FAQ: seating, gates and Rugby World Cup 2027

Is Marvel Stadium the same as Docklands Stadium?

Yes. The stadium on Bourke Street, Docklands, opened in 2000 as Colonial Stadium, was later Telstra Dome and Etihad Stadium, and has been Marvel Stadium since 2018. Rugby World Cup 2027 lists it as Docklands Stadium because tournament venues use clean names. It is the same venue with the same seating map.

How are seats numbered at Marvel Stadium?

By level and aisle rather than by section. Tickets show Level 1, 2 or 3 and an aisle from 1 to 48 (for example Level 3, Aisle 31), then a row and seat. The same aisle numbers repeat on every level, so Level 1 Aisle 30 is directly below Level 3 Aisle 30. Level 2 on the harbour (west) side is the members’ Medallion Club.

Which gate should I use at Marvel Stadium?

The gate printed on your ticket. Gates 1, 2, 3, 4 and 9 are on the Bourke Street side (Gates 2 and 3 open onto Stadium Square), Gates 6 to 8 face La Trobe Street, Gates 8 and 9 face Harbour Esplanade, and Gate 5 is on the eastern walkway. There are no pass-outs, and Guest Services are at Gates 1 and 5.

Which Rugby World Cup 2027 matches are played at Marvel Stadium?

Eight matches: France v USA (Sat 2 Oct), Scotland v Uruguay (Sun 3 Oct), Wales v Tonga (Fri 8 Oct), Argentina v Spain (Sun 10 Oct), New Zealand v Hong Kong China (Fri 15 Oct), Ireland v Uruguay (Sun 17 Oct), Round of 16 Match 3 (Sat 23 Oct) and Round of 16 Match 6 (Sun 24 Oct).

What are the best seats at Marvel Stadium for rugby?

Category 1 — the Level 1 sideline sections on the east and west sides closest to halfway — are the best seats. Because the lower tiers roll forward for rectangular sports, these seats sit close to the touchline. Category 2 sideline seats are the best value, and Category 4 behind the posts is the pick for atmosphere and price.

Is the roof closed at Marvel Stadium for Rugby World Cup 2027?

Yes. World Rugby has confirmed the retractable roof will remain closed for every Rugby World Cup 2027 match at Docklands Stadium, making it the only fully enclosed venue of the tournament. Weather and sun do not affect any seat, including the afternoon kick-offs for Argentina v Spain, Ireland v Uruguay and Round of 16 Match 6.

How do I get to Marvel Stadium and what bags are allowed?

Southern Cross Station is next to the stadium — cross the Bourke Street footbridge and you are at the gates. City trams also stop on La Trobe Street and Harbour Esplanade. Bring at most one small bag no larger than A3 (about 30 cm × 40 cm) that fits under your seat; alcohol, glass, cans, noise makers and drones are prohibited. Use the entry point printed on your ticket.
